"In Pursuit of Pinot Perfection"

Our Story

Mooney Family Wines is a “Pinot Passionate” project of Michael and Margene Mooney. Working with four of the top growers in Monterey’s famed Santa Lucia Highlands appellation (Boekenoogen, Vigna Monte Nero, Tondre & Hahn's Doctor's Vineyard), Michael and Margene craft very limited Pinot Noir and Chardonnay releases. Their aim, their passion is to produce wines that speak directly to the individual “piece of ground” – that reflect the specific character and sense of place of the vineyard and vintage in every bottle.

Critical Acclaim:

Wine Advocate - Robert Parker - June 2017

93 Points  2015 Mooney Family Boekenoogen Vineyard  /  $74  /  250 cases made

"Medium ruby-colored, 2015 Pinot Noir Boekenoogen Vineyard gives up gorgeous red currants, red plums, and mulberry notes with garrigue, Provence herbs, spice cake and black pepper.  The full-bodied palate has a commendable structure of very ripe, fine-grained tannis and plenty of freshness supporting the opulent, spciy flavors, featuring plenty of earth and red fruit preserves, layers, finishing long."   Lisa Perrotti-Brown  (9/29/17)

Wine Enthusiast - November 2016

94 Points & Editor's Choice  2014 Mooney Family Pinot Noir - Boekenoogen Vineyard  /  $68  /  238 cases made

"Brilliant example of how this grape can be done with deft decadence, this bottling reveals aromas of black cherry, crushed clove, nutmeg, smashed slate and tons of forest-floor components, including juniper.  Black plum, mace and dark cinnamon converge on the deliciously rich palate that is bolstered by bursting acidity and big sturcture."   Matt Kettman  (11/1/2016)

Wine Spectator - June 2015

93 Points  2013 Mooney Family - Boekenoogen Vineyard  |  $68  |  180 cases made

"Effusively fruity, dense, rich and concentrated, this is marked by a core of blackberry, wild berry and raspberry.  Full bodied zesty and layered, ending long and complex.  Drink now through 2021."  -  James Laube

Wine Enthusiast - December 2014

94 Points  2012 Mooney Family - Boekenoogen Vineyard  |  $68  |  240 cases made

"Much darker than many other wines of the appellation, this offers a deep, nuanced nose of clove, black soil, tobacco, white sage, violet and deep purple juice.  Soil and pine sap jump out on the palate, where herbs and blackberry swirl into a complex, powerful wine that has tannic structure to drink well into 2020."  Matt Kettman  (12/1/2014)

93 Points  2012 Mooney Family - Vigna Monte Nero  |  $52  |  220 cases made

Inviting aromas of strawberry-vanilla chiffon, cinnamon and a hint of anixe introduce this richly layered wine from the winemaker behind Chateau Margene, who sources these grapes from high up on Vigna Monte Nero.  It's thick and cxreamy on the palate, with deep flavors of black licorice, beet juice and pomegranate reduction sauce.  Matt Kettman  (12/1/2014)

Michael Mooney’s family history in California dates back seven generations. Following successful stints in high tech sales and marketing, Michael chose to pursue his long time interest in wine. He and Margene purchased a home with potential vineyard acreage in the Creston area outside Paso Robles. The family home estate and label Chateau Margene, focusing on Bordeaux varietals, debuted with the 1997 vintage and also was recognized with two 94 point wines (Wine Enthusiast) in April & June of 2014.

The Mooney Family Wines label was born in 2006.  Michael and Margene have always had a love for elegant, vineyard–centric Pinot Noir. The Mooney Family Wines portfolio soon turned its emphasis to vineyard designated Pinot Noirs and very small lots of Chardonnay from the best properties in the cool climate Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. Margene Mooney is the artistic soul of the enterprise. She designed the striking packaging and keeps the wines’ style squarely focused on balance and food-pairing versatility. Margene is a horsewoman and enjoys competing in NRHA (National Reigning Horse Association) and AQHA events throughout California and Arizona.
